Langtang is the most visited area after Annapurna and Everest due to its easy accessibility and beauty. In a short time, it not only offers grand views of Langtang Lirung (7234m), Ganesh Himal (7406m) and other high mountain peaks, but also provides insight into the varied ethnic lifestyles of the Tamangs and Sherpas, inhabitants of this area. The trail starts either from Dhunche or Syabrubesi, which is a full day drive away from Kathmandu via Trisuli. The trail passes through the thickly forested area of blue pine, oaks, maple, spruce and rhododendron (one fourth of the park is forest). The trail follows the Langtang Khola riverbank until Kyangjin gompa. At Kyangin gompa there are various options for short excursions; Kyangjin Ri (4773m) is two hour up and an hour down and it offers spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayas. Visit to Langtang Lirung glacier is 2 hours one-way. Day visit to Langshisa Kharka is worth as it offers views of Shisha Pangma (8046m) across the land of Tibet. From Syabru the trail leads to the holy lakes for Hindus, Gosainkund (7380m), where pilgrims congregate on specific days of the year wash of their sins. The trek down from the holy lake passes through Laurebina La (4600m) and descends drastically through the forestland of Helumbu valley.

We Leave Kathmandu in the morning time at 6 A.M. to travel the journey of seven hours to the Langtang Valley. The journey starts ascending over high ridges and leaves Kathmandu. If the weather permits then we can have impressive views of the Annapurna Himalayas in the west, to Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and the peaks of the Langtang region ahead.
Our journey continues through the busy town of Trisuli before we start ascending towards Dhunche and enter the Langtang National Park. An hour of driving downhill from Dhunche we arrive at Syabru Besi. After the town of Dunche it is another hour downhill to Syabru Besi and there we are at your lodge for the night.
Syabru Besi mainly has the settlement of Tamang’s, Nepal’s one of the ethnic group. The main attraction of Syabru Besi is the hot spring, people here have a strong belief that taking bath on this hot spring will heal many disease.
Bhote Koshi (Bhot – Tibet, Koshi- River), we will cross the river that is flowing from Tibet to Nepal; this means we are not that far from the other side of the Budhhist world “Tibet”. Our trail gradually starts to get uphill through subtropical forests; forest is mostly uninhabited except for those sheep and Yak pasture during winter. We can witness the Rhododendron and Oak forest where Langur Monekys are basking and enjoying the fullest. Though the trail is steep up, we kind of get the inner feeling that every step was worth it upon reaching Lama hotel.
Today our journey starts with gentle climb up to sometime but soon it becomes steeper; as we climb the hill we pass through forests of hemlock, oak, maple and white or pink rhododendrons high above the Langtang River. The mesmerizing view of snow capped peaks starts to appear along the view of Mt. Langtang Lirung, 7225m.. The trail further leads us to Ghora Tabla after crossing a log bridge. We gradually ascend and the valley opens up into a U-shaped glacial. On the way we pass through a helipad and Yak pastures, along with Rhododendrons we pass by many settlement of Tamang’s. The trail crosses, amazingly people have utilized the stream water to operate water driven flour mills and the prayer’s wheels.
With such a wonderful joy we arrive to the Langtang (3,430 m.). on this area houses are built with style of Tibetan architecture, the decoration of the houses and the flat Tibetan roof, previously wood was used, after an earthquake most of them started using galvanize flat metal to build roof. Main agriculture product of the valley is buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips and barely, people out here can grow few crops due to weather and less land for farming as the valley is surrounded by many big bulk of natural rocks.
Gompa literally means a monastery, we start our walk to Kyanjin Gompa with gradual climb through yak pasture and as we start stepping up we feel that the valley is opening out further where we see that views are becoming more adorable. We arrive to the settlement of Kayngjing after crossing few streams and debris deposited by glacier (moraines). One of the best attractions is the government managed cheese factory, for cheese lovers this can be an opportunity to try the Yak cheese. Yak is normally a male and dri or nak is female so do not get confused how male can produce milk, it’s just for the sake of branding and easy to pronounce we say Yak cheese. Your guide will tell you the best time to visit the monastery in Kyanjing.
Today you can rest or explore the area. You can visit the monastery and the cheese factory, walk up the moraine to see the spectacular ice faces and tumbling glaciers of Langtang Lirung or ascend Kyangjin Ri directly behind the village, for a breath-taking panorama of the Langtang peaks.
