These pictures, the elements of the whole image, are called layers. To understand the basics of layers within a composition, think of them as stackable elements, each of which holds part of your image. The place where you view and arrange the order of layers is called the Layers palette. The Layers palette shows individual layers and their content.
Every time you open or place images, add text, or draw a shape, the new layer is created in the Layers palette. With layers, you can do more than just arrange elements in your composition: You can edit each of them individually without affecting the rest of your image. Click to select the layer in the Layer palette, and then freely edit, move, resize, erase, paint, adjust colors, or do anything else to satisfy your artistic vision.
By using layers, you can even quickly compare several effects to determine which one is the best for the image by hiding and unhiding layers. The more you play with layers, the more you will discover creative ways to achieve your desired results. Gorgeous image compositions are created by combining several pictures into one final image. These pictures, the elements of the whole image, are called layers. To understand the basics of layers within a composition, think of them as stackable elements, each of which holds part of your image. However, there are several options for combining shapes, so instead of being on its own layer, one shape can be united, subtracted, intersected with, or excluded from another.
When shapes are combined, multiple shape layers become a single shape with multiple components. Note: By default, shape layers have blue thumbnails, while thumbnails of the shape components are gray. For example, if you add two shapes, the upper shape can be subtracted from the one below, but not vice versa. Then, if you add another shape and, say, exclude it from the two lower shapes in the group, the two lower shapes are combined first, then, the upper shape is excluded from the result of the two shapes below.
When you unite several shapes, multiple shape layers are united into a single shape with multiple components. A united shape looks the same, but can be easily moved as one and each individual component can be adjusted to unite, subtract, intersect, or exclude from the overall shape.
I tend to merge and convert to bitmap less with Pixelmator Pro than I would with other graphics apps as Pixelmator Pro’s effects are largely non-destructive: I can take a piece of text, apply a gaussian blur to it, use it as the bottom layer of a clipping mask and still edit the text.

Note : When intersecting shapes, all the shape components below the selected or uppermost shape are combined first, then the selected shape is subtracted from the result. When you exclude one shape from another, any overlapping areas are removed and all others remain. To distinguish the different shape components easier you can also choose to display their outlines. Merging the components of a shape can be useful when you want to make advanced edits to a shape as one path instead of adjusting its component paths individually.
More accurately, they determine how the colors of layers blend with any other colors underneath them. Blend modes can be used to create striking artistic effects, retouch images, and a whole lot more. You can choose blend modes in a few different places in Pixelmator Pro. One of the most basic uses is changing the blend mode of an entire layer.
This means that, if an entirely blue layer is above an entirely red layer of identical shape and size, all you see is the blue layer. In Pixelmator Pro, there are 26 different blend modes arranged into groups that create similar results: darkening, lightening, contrast, inversion, and component. The examples of each blend mode group in the sections below are created by combining the following two reference images:.
When blending images, the image that’s higher up the layers list is called the blend layer, and the layer that’s below it is the base layer. In the examples, the color wheels layer is the blend layer and the hot air balloon is the base layer. It’s important to note that some blend modes behave differently depending on whether the color wheels or the hot air balloon image is on top.
When examining the results, pay attention to the brightest and the darkest areas of the black and white gradient, as well as to the highlights and shadows in the image of the hot air balloon. These show you how each blend mode treats the whites and blacks in an image. Other colors illustrate how each of the blend modes handles overlapping midtones. For instance, the yellow, red, pink, and blue shades, in particular, all have very different color and luminance values that change from example to example.
The Normal blend mode is the default blend mode for all layers. When blending layers using blend modes in the Darken group, the resulting colors will usually be darker than either the base layer or the blend layer. Darken: Emphasizes the darkest parts of each overlapping layer by making the lighter color values translucent and keeping the darker color values fully opaque.
If the base layer color is the same as the color of the blend layer, the image remains the same. Multiply: Emphasizes the darkest parts of each overlapping layer, evenly mixing the midtones of both layers. Using the program is very intuitive and it offers tablet and touchscreen support.
